“ なぜナメクジが「同時的雌雄同体」なのかというと、これは「同時的雌雄同体」全般に見られる共通の特徴として移動する機能が低いためだと言われています。ナメクジは夜行性で一日の行動半径はおよそ数メートル程度。この狭い移動を繰り返していくわけですが、この中でせっかく出会った別のナメクジが同性だった場合、ただでさえ低い繁殖の確率がさらに下がるわけです。そのため、両方の生殖器を持つことになったと考えられています。 また、両方の生殖器を持つのであればいわゆる自家生殖も可能なのではないか？と考えられますが、ナメクジの場合はそのあたりがはっきりしていないようで、遠い過去に出会った相手の精子を体内にためこんで、必要になったら取り出して受精するということも実際に行っているらしく、端から見ていると自家受精なのか、ストックを取り出して使っているのか判別できないようです。
